Build from a clear center
Put characters next to each other and copy the whole line. That is all a combination is. There is no special format.
Short combinations work best. Two or three marks read as deliberate. A dozen reads as noise.

Spaces are part of the design
Spacing is the usual problem. Each character is placed on its own, so a proportional font can shift the whole arrangement.

Text is not a fixed canvas
Test the result at the width people will actually see. Mobile is where most combinations break.

Keeping a combination stable
Line breaks catch people out most. A run of characters can wrap between any two of them, and once it splits across two lines the effect is gone. The shorter the line, the fewer places it can fail.
