Joiners help form certain scripts and emoji sequences.
A form may count the character, search may fail to match around it, and code can treat two visually identical strings as different.
If the goal is spacing or alignment, ordinary spaces, layout tools or visible dividers are usually more predictable and accessible.

They perform real formatting work
They have real uses, and they can also cause trouble. They take no space and draw nothing, so you cannot see them.
That is useful in typography and unhelpful when one arrives by accident.

Invisible does not mean empty
Zero-width joiners and non-joiners control how letters connect in Arabic and Devanagari. A zero-width space marks where a line may break.
- Use only when the writing system or format requires it
- Do not use invisible text to bypass moderation or validation
- Reveal hidden characters while debugging

Choose visible structure for decoration
The problem is intent. Using them to shape text is fine. Using them to dodge a filter or a length limit is not.

Legitimate uses, and the boundary
If you are not sure what is in a piece of text, run it through an inspector. That takes seconds and shows every hidden character before you paste it somewhere it matters.
