Cross characters can mean close, cancel, multiplication, a footnote or a religious cross, so context matters.
A visual cross can represent multiplication, closing, an incorrect state, a footnote or a faith tradition. Choose by standardized meaning and surrounding context rather than shape alone. That amounts to 46 copyable values here — 41 of them one character long, 5 longer.
Names such as Multiplication X, Multiplication Sign, Cross Mark, Latin Cross appear here, and counting every entry puts Variation Selector-16 (6), Skull And Crossbones (3), Orthodox Cross (2) at the top. Single-character values span U+00D7 to U+1F94D.

The span runs U+00D7 to U+1F94D. By Unicode general category that is symbol 39, punctuation 2.
Counted across the stored entries, the commonest name patterns are Variation Selector-16 (6), Skull And Crossbones (3), Orthodox Cross (2).
Sequence count is 5. Joiners appear in 1, variation selectors in 5, and the deepest entry stacks 5 code points.
The easy mix-up is Multiplication X versus Multiplication Sign. They are different characters: U+2715 and U+00D7. Try symbol first — 27 to pick from.
Leave punctuation unless nothing else fits. Colour or no colour is the first choice: 17 emoji, 29 plain. Test the result in the real app before you use it.
We sort these by job rather than by Unicode category, so one group can hold several formal types.
Ordinary text symbols, styled by your CSS. 59% here.
Drawn by the operating system, not your font. 26% here.
Several code points joined into one image. 11% here.
Characters that organise a sentence. 4% here.

There are 46 cross symbols here. All of them copy in one click. The largest set is symbol, with 27. They come mostly from one part of Unicode: Dingbats. 29 are plain text. The other 17 are emoji, so your phone or computer draws them in colour.
Symbol is the biggest at 27. The rest split between emoji or pictograph, punctuation and emoji sequence.
They come from Dingbats (15), Miscellaneous Symbols (12) and Supplemental Arrows-B (8). The range is U+00D7 to U+1F94D. That spread is why fonts disagree.
Multiplication X is not Multiplication Sign. Read the name, not the shape.
5 use more than one character. Copy the whole thing or it breaks.

| Type | Examples | Good for | Watch for |

| Symbol | ✕ ✗ ✘ | Status, validation and warning labels | Substituting the letter x for the multiplication sign × |
| Emoji or pictograph | ✖ ❌ ☦ | Editing and reference notation | Using a religious cross as a generic error icon |

Every figure below is counted from the 46 entries stored for this page rather than estimated. The characters are drawn from Dingbats (15), Miscellaneous Symbols (12) and Supplemental Arrows-B (8).
| Group | Entries | Examples | Code points | Usual presentation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Symbol | 27 | ✕ ✗ ✘ | U+00D7–U+2A2F | Text presentation |
| Emoji or pictograph | 12 | ✖ ❌ ☦ | U+2626–U+274C | Emoji presentation |
| Punctuation | 2 | † ‡ | U+2020–U+2021 | Text presentation |
| Emoji sequence | 5 | ⚔️ ☠️ ✝️ | sequence | Emoji presentation |
Practical note: Presentation is the typical default. A variation selector, a specific font stack, or an application that overrides emoji rendering can change what you see after pasting.

Tip: A symbol should decorate a label, not replace it — plain words keep the meaning available to search and to assistive technology.

Copying stores text, so the value survives the clipboard intact. Paste it with Ctrl V, ⌘ V or your device's Paste command.
Start with Multiplication X. It works nearly everywhere.
For editing and reference notation, choose among the 27 symbol entries, then check the weight sits comfortably beside your type.
When creating compact legends and document keys, paste the complete entry — several of these are multi-code-point sequences that break if truncated.

If you would rather type than paste, the codes below are what you need — the decimal value for Windows, the hexadecimal for Word and macOS.
| Character | Name | Windows | Hex | HTML |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ✕ | Multiplication X | Alt 10005 | 2715 | ✕ |
| × | Multiplication Sign | Alt 215 | 00D7 | × |
| ❌ | Cross Mark | Alt 10060 | 274C | ❌ |
| ✝ | Latin Cross | Alt 10013 | 271D | ✝ |
| ✚ | Heavy Greek Cross | Alt 10010 | 271A | ✚ |
| ⚔ | Crossed Swords | Alt 9876 | 2694 | ⚔ |
Alt codes reach only the first 65,536 code points, and only from a numeric keypad. 4 entries here sit above that ceiling. A further 5 are sequences, which no shortcut reproduces — copy those instead. Full per-platform instructions live in the keyboard guide.

About 43% come from Dingbats. The rest come from Miscellaneous Symbols and Supplemental Arrows-B. 29 act like letters.
They take the colour of the text around them. 17 are emoji and arrive in colour you cannot change. Unicode files the emoji ones under Symbols and Objects.
Watch the 5 that use several characters at once. 1 of those are held together by a hidden joiner. Copy the whole thing, or it breaks apart.
The newest here arrived in Emoji 11.0. Older phones show a blank box instead.
A pasted entry is redrawn by the receiving application's font. Expect small differences in width and weight across devices, and larger ones where a font lacks the character entirely.
07
Substituting the letter x for the multiplication sign ×.
Using a religious cross as a generic error icon.
Relying on a cross without a text status in safety or form feedback.

They are two distinct Unicode characters: Multiplication X is U+2715 (HTML ✕) and Multiplication Sign is U+00D7 (HTML ×). A font may draw them almost identically, but they sort and search as separate values.
Write ✕ (hex) or ✕ (decimal) to get ✕. Numeric references sidestep encoding problems in older toolchains.
Look for the 29 non-emoji entries. Those behave like letters — style them, colour them, put them in a heading. The 17 emoji entries are drawn by the operating system instead.
5 entries here are sequences of more than one code point, and 1 of those are held together by a zero-width joiner. If the destination does not support the sequence, or if the copy was truncated, the parts render individually. Copy the entry with the button rather than by selecting the characters.
The answer is Dingbats, covering 15 of them; the rest come from Miscellaneous Symbols and Supplemental Arrows-B. Older blocks are the safe ones; anything added recently needs testing first.
The newest entry on this page was introduced in Emoji 11.0. Devices that have not received a font update since then will show a blank rectangle instead. Test on a real older device before using a recent character where the meaning matters.

Notation is about precise state and precise text, so a status frame and an inspector that reveals stray hidden characters are the relevant utilities.
To wrap one of these cross symbols around a word, build the line in the Symbol Maker. The Unicode tools hub compares all seven and says when each is the right choice.

Every figure on this page is computed from the stored inventory of 46 entries. Names, general categories and code points are generated from the Unicode 17.0 character database rather than typed by hand; emoji membership is read from the emoji data files published alongside it.
Try “heart”, “check”, “moon” or paste a symbol.
